How do I figure out if my skin barrier is damaged - and what do I do to heal it?
Have you ever felt like your skin is just not on its A-game? Maybe you got a bit too enthusiastic with one too many new product too quickly, or maybe you increased your usage of acids, or the strength or frequency of retinol applications. I sure can relate to this - I have done this more times than I'd like to admit. And yes, at this stage I definitely know better, but I still occasionally get an unpleasant surprise.
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, it acts as a defence mechanism against environmental aggressors, and it is absolutely crucial that you do your best to keep it healthy and protected. If you're wondering whether your skin barrier is crying out for help, you’re in the right place. Below are the tell-tale signs of a damaged skin barrier, followed by what I do to repair it fairly quickly.
Signs of a Damaged Skin Barrier
Understanding whether your skin barrier is damaged is the first step in healing it. Here are some common symptoms to watch out for:
Increased Sensitivity: If products you normally use suddenly cause irritation or stinging, it might be a sign that your skin barrier is compromised.
Dryness and Dehydration: Seeing flaky skin or feeling like no amount of moisturizer helps? This can indicate that your skin barrier isn't retaining moisture as well as it should. Sometimes it feels like the moisturiser or oil you usually use is just not absorbing like it usually is, like it is just sitting on the surface.
Itchiness and Redness: An itchy or red complexion can also be a signal that your skin barrier is damaged and inflamed.
Dullness: If your skin has lost its glow and looks consistently dull, it might be because a damaged barrier isn't effectively shedding dead skin cells.
Acne Breakouts: A weakened barrier may lead to increased acne because your skin is more susceptible to bacteria and pollutants.
Mending Your Skin Barrier
Don’t worry, your skin is a self renewing wrapper. With the right care, you can nurse your skin barrier back to health. Follow the guidelines below for at least 2-5 days before you return to your regular skincare routine. If your routine is extensive, then you may need to introduce your serums gradually.
Switch to a Gentle Facial Cleanser: Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser - it is very important that you check that it doesn't have any acids, peels, or exfoliants. Harsh scrubs and exfoliants can strip your skin and aggravate the barrier further. Keep it simple (and inexpensive), such as this CeraVe cleanser, this Cetaphil cleanser, this COSRX gel cleanser, or this Anua cleanser. Only use a cleanser once a day ideally in the evening, and just wash your face with water in the morning.
Create an occlusive barrier: You can use a super simple fragrance free moisturiser, such as this Cetaphil facial cream, this Vanicream moisturiser, if you have access to it. Or you can do what I do, use a form of medicated zinc oxide cream aka baby butt cream. This is a product worth making the small investment in, as you can also use it for slugging when your skin barrier is back to normal - my favourite is Weleda nourishing baby cream. Alternatively, if the slight white tint of the zinc cream puts you off, you can use Aquaphor or Vaseline to create the barrier and protection for your skin to do its thing and repair itself.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water does more than quench your thirst—it helps your skin stay hydrated from the inside out.
Protect Against the Environment: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
Seek Professional Advice: If your symptoms persist, consider consulting a dermatologist to get professional diagnosis and treatment.
Final Thoughts
Remember, a happy skin barrier is the backbone of your overall skin health. By identifying the signs of damage and implementing protective and restorative measures, you can ensure that your skin remains healthy, resilient, and radiant. So, give your skin the TLC it deserves, and watch it thank you with a luminous, glowing complexion!
